measuring angle accuretly

Can you measure an angle with IR sensor and arduino? My goal is to measure accurately measure how much a dc motor rotates. exact angle.if not..how can i do this?

Look up ‘absolute encoder’. That’s one option.

Another option is ‘incremental encoder’.

A dc motor without a gearbox? My robot car came with two dc motors with integrated gearboxes. I bet you mean something similar. Along with the car I got these encoder discs with 24 slots. If I attach the wheel to the motor shaft and a led and an ldr, I can count pulses while the motor revolves. 15 degrees per pulse.

You could use an AS5040, it is a 10 bit absolute hall effect encoder. You put a special sort of magnet on the end of the shaft and have this chip mounted a few mm in front of it. Then you get a reading of the angle from it.

I used it for this project to measure the angles of these pendulums.
