Measuring board pins with a multimeter.

Describe the LED activity at power up. Does the LED blink or is it on steady? What happens when you press the reset button? Does it blink three times? If it does, there’s likely a bootloader present.

it is a steady pulse of maybe about 2 Hz ?
pressing the RESET button doesn't change the blink pattern - just makes the LED go off (for as long as i press it).

i thought maybe there might have been a pre-loaded bootloader, but using the CH340G USB-to-TTL converter confirmed there wasn't - "not_in_sync" error, when trying to upload via Serial.

So now your Lilypad runs at 2X speed? I thought you couldn’t load anything.

no, i mean - that topic is relevant to my case in that this Lilypad clone could have a 16 MHz crystal - i can't read anything on that little component - just says "Y1" on the board.

i have since changed the boards.txt and now have an entry for Lilypad Arduino w/- ATmega 328P @ 16 MHz

i have now tried to Upload using Programmer via UNO (with 10 uF suppressor cap. b/n RESET and GND (on the programmer board) - and failed, and then also clicked "Burn Bootloader" and received this error;

avrdude: stk500_program_enable(): protocol error, expect=0x14, resp=0x50
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
         Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
         this check.

avrdude: stk500_disable(): protocol error, expect=0x14, resp=0x51

my reliable Nick Gammon sketch "Atmega_Board_Detector" also cannot detect what is going on - it keeps failing to "enter ICSP Programming mode" - maybe, that (rather dated) sketch doesn''t cater for a Lilypad with a 16 MHz crystal - which i have to say, is STILL NOT CONFIRMED AS FACT....
