That is precisely the sort of setup I was thinking of, except that instead of sourcing 5V from the Arduino, I'd rather get it from the car because I don't trust the arduino to supply 5V... it's usually less like 4.2 and isn't stable, depending on loading conditions. This could mislead me to believe it's working at one moment and then it could fail while I'm driving and screw up my car lol.
