Are sensors such as the DS18B20 affected by the stray magnetic field you would get if attached to the exterior aluminium housing of a 1hp motor?
My guess is that the sensor would be 1 or 2 cm from the actual winding.

Hi,
I don't THINK so.. The DS18B20 is running on 5V and if you twist the signal wires together they would not pick up a lot of noise. If you use a "waterproof" DS18B20 then the chip is inside a stainless steel tube and has more protection. See This Page for info. The waterproof sensors are shown HERE

No, its non-magnetic, its just a piece of silicon in epoxy. Just don't make the mistake of attaching the
sensor ground to the housing - sensors should only be grounded at the Arduino end, to avoid any chance of
a ground loop.
