You need to get a meter without a current reading capability. Well, on second thought, you already have one!

Spark and blown fuse in the meter.
Nothing too dramatic, just a reminder that we all make silly mistakes.
350V on the capacitor before I shorted it out, still 200V afterwards.

In the past, that would have resulted in a bent needle.

What is the VC8145 like,
I'm thinking of getting a bench DMM.

At work I use a Keysight model 34470A DMM, for calibration certifications, but its a bit out of my league.

I can't remember how much I paid for it but those prices look about right.

What's it like? How do I answer? It does what I need as someone who mostly does electronics as a hobby. It beeps a lot. If beeps get on your nerves buy something else. Other than that it does everything I need to my satisfaction.

You are right, too many facilities, waste of a good meter.
We had the earlier HP version of the Keysight, was also a good cal ref meter, but auto-ranging went mad one day and the boss decided it had done more than 10years of faithful work, so replaced it.
When I get the chance going to see what is wrong and try and resurrect it for general bench work.
I'm re-arranging my home bench/laptop/assembly table at the moment and a bench DMM would be handier than having a handheld DMM bouncing around, or stored in a draw with its leads wound up.
