Measuring water level in a cylinder with a barometric sensor

Hey,

I was wondering if any of you have tried to do some water level measuring with a barometric sensor. I know it can be done with a gauge pressure sensor (like a freescale MPX...) but since I would like to measure the volume of liquid in a cylinder without inserting anything in the cylinder, I was thinking maybe a barometric sensor can do the job..

If this is not doable, do you guys know any other way to easily measure the volume of liquid (not just water, but any liquid basicly) in a cylinder without inserting anything in the cylinder?

The pressure at the bottom of the cylinder is proportional to the height of the liquid column. To measure the pressure you need to open the cylinder at the bottom.

Any means of measuring the liquid level will allow you to calculate the volume.
