The notion of charging for the IDE is very depressing.
For me the fact that the Arduino system is Free and Open Source is a major part of its attraction.
Surely, if the Arduino team decided to start charging, there would be sufficient OpenSource interest for volunteers to keep an existing version of the IDE available on a free basis.
