I worked up this 1284 Logger as well.
1284P only has 16K SRAM, but I did fit in uSD card, you can out on different crystals.
MightyCore supports 16 or 20 MHz, and someplace there is 24 MHz support as well.
Or try 32 MHz.
Here it is with a Programmer connected and an FTDI Basic on a short extension cable
