Mentoring people, loosely speaking

I overheard someone talking on their cellphone the other day:

I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of rookies!
...
I'm 72 years old and the last thing I want to be doing is teaching someone how to do [beginner stuff.]

How sad. Teaching the newbies things from your area of expertise is one of the most important things you can do. And it's relatively easy, too.

I guess there's a limit somewhere, where absolute beginners don't need experts to teach them their first steps. But .... still!

I find teaching the basics difficult and challenging even though i have over half century as a hobbyist and technician. Thank goodness for some fine tutorials that i have found that i can refer new users to.

In contrast to the benefits of hanging around with seniors: e.g. hearing about an astonishing variety of aches, pains, diseases and other major medical problems.

I'm retired. Over my career I've learned a lot of different things. Teaching others is my way to continue "using" my abilities, else they would just die with me.

I require only two things:

  1. Desire to learn
  2. Enough natural talent in the subject.

I used to water ski a lot. During those years I've taught a lot of folks how to ski. I've only had one "student" who just couldn't do it. He was in his early teens and there were no physical limitation. However he just couldn't... we/he tried about 10 times, unfortunately he was unsuccessful. And I prided myself in being able to teach "everybody"

I feel it has to be a balance between knowledge transfer / the rewarding journey to helping other grow whilst you also get challenged and learn new things too - that keeps you on your toes and it's good at all age.

Agreed. It's difficult to remember the things that a beginner doesn't know, that will need to be explained...

Since I am a beginner, and will always consider myself that way,
Thank you, to this forum
(I silently read the posts and attempt to make sense of the information and process it accordingly)

Please ask for help to make sense. The answers or clarifications help everyone.

Sometimes I do, I do not like wasting people’s time by asking many questions though.
(In reality, I suppose I am too curious)
(Especially if it’s a duplicate question)

What may be a waste of time answer for you may be exactly what the next guy needs to complete their understanding.

"The only stupid question is the one that remains unasked."

True,

Also true.
Perhaps I will re enter this community, and learn more.
Today has been a day of revelations, for me, here and otherwise.
Thank you.

Trying to explain something as simply and clearly as possible to others forces me to examine the subject and find the clarity to try and show.
