MKR 1000 Google Cloud Platform IoT Core and MQTT Failure

I'm trying to use a MKR1000 to connect to Google Cloud Platform GCP using MQTT. I tried using the guide described in the github repo GoogleCloudPlatform/google-cloud-iot-arduino. I figure since we are trying to connect to GCP, this would be the definitive guide. I filed an issue with the project desribing my results with the guide.
