Glad you got it going.
It might not have but they are still very much needed.
I have had a similar problem when trying to replace a water pump on my laser cutter. I never did get down to the root of it.
It very well could cause excessive current draw when not immersed, and that would in turn make it look like your power supply was insufficient. Just a guess though.
