MKRWIFI suddenly only connects to wifi when connected to computer

I have a MKR 1010 Wifi which have been working flawless (well, I'm no developer, so code could have been way better) for more than a year without any changes.
Suddenly it did not connect to Wifi, so a few weeks ago I connected it to a laptop to see what was going on.
When connected to the laptop it boots just fine, connects to wifi (and MQTT), and do what it should.
As soon as I power it "external" (using various phone chargers, was using a very old Apple USB-charger intially, have tried 3-4 different chargers now), it does not connect to wifi, but obviously I have no idea what it does. I can see the led lighting, sometimes it was connecting to wifi without getting an IP address or it could get an IP but no traffic.

I have a mad serious network, and could see that it was connecting to a AP not so close when it connected, so tonight I created a separate SSID on the proper AP to force it over to a "better" AP. Works jut fine when connected to the laptop, but not when powered by the phone charger.

Any suggestions? Most info I've found about similar issues seems to be related to powering through different voltages, but in my case it's usb all over, and sometimes it connects to wifi (but not MQTT).

The Arduino is only connected to a Ultrasound sensor, measuring a distance which is reported to my home automation system through MQTT.
