Can I short a MOSFET if just apply gate voltage and have no drain voltage applied? I wanted to test the gate driver so I just had the gate driver (isolated) connected to the gate and was switching with Arduino but I shorted the drain and source of the FET despite there being nothing applied.
If you do not check for a change in drain current, how do you know the MOSFET is working?

It's possible but would be a rare occurance.
You should have had the drain and source connected together during the test
Hi, @erikah_0400
What do you mean "I shorted the drain and source of the FET despite there being nothing applied."
Have you got a 10K resistor between the gate drive output and the MOSFET source?
Can post a diagram of your testing circuit?

The SBAT was not connected to anything and the gates were connected to a gate driver and ardunio.
