Most stupid: what is "swiitch"

I did a quick search and sorry (took my degree in English Lit), I figured I'd expand my horizons.

Got the Arduino beginners kit and I'm stuck on beginner's part 1; is it me or can a complete beginner like me not be able to tell what a "place your switch across the center of the board" means when I have no idea what a "switch" is?

P.S. Be gentle -- one day you may need me to write your lit paper ;-)

A switch is a thing that is used to connect or disconnect a signal/power supply. In this case, I think you are referring to a "tactile switch". Careful, it has 4 pins and there are 2 sets of 2 pins internally connected, so connect it the right way.

Is Google broken?

Are you familiar with the concept of a light switch?

Thank you for your reply.

Let's just say -- for example -- that I know nothing, and I was looking for such a switch, would it (again, excuse my ignorance), look rectangular (I found something that is rectangular), or is there any standard for the shape of these things?

I am simply going by a book, which says "place your switch across the center of the board"; the book, needless to say, does not indicate what such a switch looks like.

At the risk of repeating myself, I am trying to expand my horizons...

All too well, sir. Zathras finds himself in an almost untenable state.

Whilst google is my friend, I am so new to your world that a "switch" in a kit is as foreign to me as "xxx" (fill in the blanks) might be to you.

Again, assuming I'm working from a kit, how might I recognize such an on-off switch component, given that my previous experience has been with large white ivory things, none on which are in said kit?

I challenge you, sir, to explain.

Still learning your board!

If I had a dime for every time I have told someone to google it, I’d be slightly more happy than I am today. I feel suddenly sheepish!

Please forgive me, and please take this in the spirit with which it is offered:

Google it for a picture...that is what you are looking for...

I was almost tempted not to repost because this argument is kinda funny

I take your meaning sir, and I understand. Be forewarned, however, that I am no longer typing from my Chromebook, now that my main machine has been successfully upgraded to the Preview version of Windows 10 (took forever, I might add).

Shall we take this offline? Is there an IM alternative?

Yes there is. I have talked to NickGammon and arranged a time and a place! Buy yourself a ticket to Russia and you will both meet at Lake Karachay. Now NickGammon may take about an hour or so, so just stick around until he arrives, then you can kick his butt! I believe in you macthelist!

Man, I love you guys. But I'm already in Russia! We should meet in London, ON, Canada, just so it'll be a fair fight!

P.S. So I registered on Temboo, but I still don't know how to show my pretty face. Am I missing something?

I'm so happy to (for once) to be the object of someone else's ridicule!

I too was almost tempted not to repost, but I find your (non?) responses to be equally funny!

Anyway, off to bed. I will humiliate myself tomorrow by carrying in my Arduino beginner's kit and asking the same question of my far-more-technical co-workers.

I promise to be back with a slightly more informed questions. I like you guys -- you're mean and nasty to new people. I can relate.

I like you too, you dont give up when people are mean to you...

But this could all have been avoided by either using google or reading the very first response

macthelist: I like you guys -- you're mean and nasty to new people trolls

I fixed that for you.

Why?

 <<<<<<<< just in case
