Motion sensor to control irrigation system

Interested in developing a controller that can be added to, and modulate pre-existing irrigation valves based on motion. Don’t know where to begin. Thanks!

That sounds like a fun project. Do let us know how it progresses.

Hmmmm interesting idea but what is there to work with. Post the current details including a schematic and the Arduino Code.

The usual motion for valves is to turn them on and turn them off. Do you have valves with a different motion?

Currently, the system is controlled by a Rainbird ESP-ME3 unit. (https://www.rainbird.com/products/esp-me3-series-controllers). It drives multiple wired valves (https://www.rainbird.com/professionals/products/plastic-valves) based on a programmed timed schedule.

My idea is to send a signal from specifically placed motion sensors to the controller to temporarally (5-10 seconds) open, then re-close specific valves.

The purpose of the idea is to utilize the irrigation system as a pest and intruder deterent. Commercially available systems e.g. Rainbird, Orbit, etc., do not offer such a unit. We are currently using Orbit Enforcer units https://www.orbitonline.com/collections/yard-protection) but they require hoses to each unit which are unsightly and must be moved to mow the grass.

As mentioned in original post, I have ZERO programming knowledge or ability, just a good idea shared by many. Could be a good opportunity for a 3rd party product if possible to execute.

Then, I guess, you have no interest in going further with this idea. Too bad.

I agree, I do something similar but my system is custom so doing that was easy. Assuming your control uses a solid state output (24 VAC) you can use that to cycle a relay that the contacts trigger the valve and add another device across those contacts to cycle it as well. I am not sure where the 24V comes from so you may need an additional part so you do not have to hack the controller.

People coming in the yard at night after dark appear never remember there towel and soap.

Paul, quite the contrary and sorry if my post gave you the wrong impression. My point is that I have no idea of where to begin and I am on this forum hoping to network with people that DO know what they are doing!

Have you searched the forum for anything relating to irrigation? OR look at the end of this thread, there are likely links included that will get your started.

Gil, makes a lot of sense to perhaps have a module that utilizes the 24v coming from the controller to open and close the valve. Would have to find out if which side of the circuit the controller switch is on.

Thanks, I’ll take a look!
