Motor and project advice

I need two small motors capable of lifting up to 40 pounds. They need to lift that up to six feet high. I need advice with arduino kit that would allow me to program and control how long the motor runs and maybe a way to automatically start the motor once the 40 pounds are placed in the canister. I'm not a mechanical engineer but I can tell you that the first thing you need to do is define your criteria for "lift 40 lbs". What does that mean ? Does that mean lift like a wench , where there is a cable spool and either gears or a chain & sprocket assembly ? These details make a difference as well as your mechanical setup. If you have a gearbox, the motor rating depends on the gear ratio of the gearbox. If you have a chain and sprocket assembly the motor ratio depends on the diameter of the pinion gear and the sprocket gear. You have to define these before you can ask what motors you need. You have to have a mechanical design before you can spec your drive chain. If you pick your motors first and then try to design your system around the motors, you may find that it is not doable or it is impractical or too costly. Design the system first. This is a uC forum , not a mechanical design forum. That doesn't mean that there are not members who are mechanical engineers. It means you should start on a mechanical engineering forum first and come back when you have a design. No one can tell you what motors you need without knowing the dimensions of the mechanical components first.

Thanks for the reply. To answer some of your questions. The motor will be used to raise a canister sitting on a platform the platform itself is approximately 20 inches by 20 inches. Ideally I will use a motor that will be under the platform and it will raise the platform with a sprocket or some sort of gear. Suggestions appreciated also suggestions on best way to control the motor as it has to be automated.

For that sort of load I suggest you get a winch motor/controller/power supply assembly that is designed for the job. I would get an electric winch with sufficient spare capacity, and then hack the remote control to give you 'up'/'down' control. You will need to do some research to figure out how the remote control works, but for example if it uses momentary switches you could wire a relay in parallel with each switch and then use a motor/relay driver to control each relay from the Arduino. I guess you will probably want to have some form of position feedback too.
