In the schematic (figure 4) on the datasheet, there's a diode just above the MOSFET. I'm not sure what to get for that part?

Here is the schematic. Do I need just a general purpose diode like the 1N4001 for the diode just above the MOSFET?

That's not a separate diode, its an integral part of the MOSFET - all power MOSFETs have this "body diode" as part of their structure for reasons too complex to explain here.
