Motor ESC "arming"?

Hey, trying to control this motor: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__39034__Turnigy_Multistar_2209_980Kv_14Pole_Multi_Rotor_Outrunner.html with this ESC: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__25363__Turnigy_Multistar_15_Amp_Multi_rotor_Brushless_ESC_2_3S.html and an arduino UNO. I seem to have been able to make the esc enter programming mode with the code from this site http://robots.dacloughb.com/project-2/esc-calibration-programming/ but, as I am new to this kind of thing, I have no idea how I would simply plug in the motor and make it respond to values given by the arduino. I have tried multiple sketches from this site https://forum.sparkfun.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=32036 but it seems that I cannot get the motor to respond other than enter programming mode with the sketch from the first site. All I want to do is bring the esc into some kind of "flight mode" where I can just start throwing speed values at it.
