motor shield help

I am new to arduino and trying to work on an issue I am having. I'd like to have 4 solenoids engage via the arduino unit. I was trying to avoid doing the whole breadboard, transistor thing by using a motor shield. the v1 motor shield that I have has documentation about using a stepper motor and servos, but does not mention a solenoid. Can I use a solenoid with a v1 motor shield? What would the code look like? Thanks in advance for your help.

This is a guess, but if you substitute a solenoid for a motor and issue "full speed forward" and "stop" commands as if there were a motor connected then it would probably work as long as the current, voltage and polarity requirements of the solenoid can be supplied by the motor shield. Try this at your own risk.

How many motors can the shield control and what is the power source for the solenoids ?
