motor shield making noise

Hello,
I'm building a robot and using a motor shield Arduino to command 2 DC motors. I send 2 PWM and the 4 signals corresponding to both directions and brakes from an arduino Uno. The motors turn when I switch on the power, but the shield starts making a noise, a loud and continuous beep. Is it normal, and where can it come from?

Are you sure its not the motor windings making the sound? If the PWM frequency is in the audio range (likely) then I'd expect that.
