Motors not working at all

Hey guys,

I know this is a beginners questions but I've been trying to fix this for literally months and I just hit rock-bottom.

I have these 2 DC motors that come with a gearbox and wheels to build a simple robot (These ones)

I'm trying to build a simple robot yet these motors just don't work at ALL. I connected it straight to the battery and nothing happens. I used an L298N motor controller and nothing happens.

I measured the voltage across the output of the motor controller and is 6.4 V, which is more than enough. But it never turns, it sometimes makes a quiet, high pitch noise and jitters a tiny bit but never turns.

Does anyone know what is happening and how it can be solved?

If the motors don't turn when connected directly to the battery then don't expect them to turn when used with a control board

What type of battery are you using ?
Is it a 9V PP3 by any chance ?

Yes it is A 9V PP3 (This one)

Why am I not surprised ?

That type of battery is intended to supply low current, such as that used by a smoke alarm. Use 6 AA batteries in series as you need to supply significant current to the motors

From the page you linked to

  • Current: 100MA - 120MA

and you have 2 of them

Not silly, but certainly very common, hence my guess as to the battery type
