The Seeedunio folks have placed extra connector pads on 1" grids in their latest series of Arduino clone boards, Just drop in another female connector and you can mate up with standard spacing proto board, or use the existing connector and standard shields fit. I think that is the tack that the Arduino folks should follow if they ever do a new board layout.
