I have an upcoming project which requires multicolored LED in range of viable light to IR.
I can "demonstrate the concept " with individual LEDs , but eventually need to have the light source as compacts as technology allows.
So far I have not found any SMT IR LED.

What current range (or mW) are you tartgeting for your application ?
LEDengin makes IR LEDs in several output power ranges starting with the LZ1. But with a 700mA Max constant current that is obviously a high power LED that is SMD but usually reflow soldered on a MCPCB.
