multiple LED's

Ok, so beginner question, sorry. I see there is a setup in the "learning" section to daisy chain for multiple LED's. how many led's is it ok to put on one pin, and why? I've tried looking this up on google, not finding much

I ask because my board is currently driving 9 LED's from one pin, with no visible problems

Are you driving them in series or parallel? Presumably in parallel, since you only have 5V! What resistor(s) are you using?

The AVR chip is only specified to supply 40mA per pin, but you may be able to get away with drawing more than that. However, it's outside the guarantee given by the chip maker, and it may damage the chip (maybe now, maybe after a few hours use).
