Multiple ws2801 strips for disco dance floor

Working on a project for a disco dance floor for our dance studio. Current plan is two 4' x 8' blocks, with 144 LED-modules per block (6" spacing). Using 12V SMD 5050 4 LEDs per module, ws2801.

My first battle is circuit design, programming is secondary. Long term program goal is to choreograph (time) the patterns to the time of the music. short term ... make it light up

Hoping you can point me in right direction, or tell me i'm crazy and it won't work.

The data sheet is showing 0.96W, with 20 modules per chain. I have a 300W power supply and am planning two blocks, so 288 modules, bringing me under 300W total.

Thanks.

Bill

Sorry, 8 rows of 16 is 128, not 144. So total is 256 LED modules.

Hi,

Have you considered ws2812b leds? They are available mounted on individual tiny pcbs, so you can achieve your 6" spacing. This might simplify construction. They run on 5V supply.

Paul:

Thanks, i had not considered that yet. I found a supplier of the ws2801 that can make custom wire length between the modules so my spacing is not an issue.

I will look into the ws2812B.

Thanks.
