Multiplexer+

Hello all,

I'm looking for a component similar to the SN74150 (http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/sn74150.html) 16-line to 1-line data selector / multiplexer, but I want to communicate with that component by querying it (using rs-232 or SPI). For example, sending it a specific signal (or byte) will result in sending back 16 bits that represent the current state of all 16 inputs. I know it's not a simple multiplexer, but does it exist?

I'm asssuming you want something in addition to the basic arduino, which has a serial interface and a bunch of IO lines already.

The MAX7301 looks like it would fit the bill. Has up to 28 ports and an SPI interface.
