The encoder I used for my steering project was broken due to the wrong connection.
The led inside exploded.Circuit paths are broken.I tried to find a solution and I did as follows.
1-I removed the led placed on them and placed a different color.
2-I connected two of the four pins as a-b phase.
3-I made 5v and gnd connection for the led.

That was probably what caused the first explosion. You must use a current limiting resistor in series with an LED.
Originally there was no problem, I think it was worth each other.
I replaced the broken led with a new one. But something seems to be missing. The remaining 2 pins are empty. There are 6 pins in total.
I soldered to the direct encoder.Please take good care of the photo, one is original and the other is final shape.

Look carefully there's an SMT resistor going to the pad for the LED.
Firstly the optical line-up pobably has to be good for this to work, a slit source is needed, and secondly
the two sensors (probably photodiodes or phototransistors) might be damaged - they need testing to
see if each responds to light.
Also they might have IR filters on them, so require an IR LED.
