All you need to do to start with is remove the Uno from the CNC machine -completely!!

Put the jumper on the FTDI module to 5v and hook it up to the Uno using my instructions:

> [@outbackhut](#):
>
> - Adapter **GND → GND**
> - Adapter **TX → Arduino RX (D0)**
> - Adapter **RX → Arduino TX (D1)**
> - Adapter **5 V → 5 V** (only if you’re not powering the board another way)
> - Adapter **DTR → RESET** through a 0.1 µF cap for auto-reset

And then run `avrdude -c arduino -P /dev/ttyUSB0 -b 19200 -p m328p -U flash:r:dump.hex:i `from your PC the FTDI module is connected to.

_ **IF** _ you can pull the hex dump, you’ll be buying a new UNO and uploading the hex to that.

If not, we will revisit things we can do.

let me see if i’m understanding this correctly and correct me if i’m wrong, you are only trying to dump the hex code right? i thought you were saying that this module could be a solution for the faulty usb connection, you want me to connect the module so i can dump the hex code from the board so i can re assemble it and upload it into another board?

also english is my second language maybe some things are lost in translation.

thanks for the help you are providing, it’s been very helpful.

also, the code that you quoted, i have to use the arduino ide software to use it right?

If you can’t dump the hex, it can be made to work as a replacement, but I would advise trying to dump the hex first as it is a bit of a better and more permanent fix to replace the UNO.

What caused the 16u2 to blow up? What has that damaged? What is going to wear out next because of that?

run it from a linux PC:

`sudo apt update`
`sudo apt install avrdude`

and then run `avrdude -c arduino -P /dev/ttyUSB0 -b 19200 -p m328p -U flash:r:dump.hex:i` in your terminal.

Not the IDE

this conversation is really funny because i respond and in the same time you edit your response and respond with whatever thing i’m asking when i’m writing and then it looks like i’m repeating the same thing you have already said after editing 🤣

don’t worry tho i will try to get that module and then try to do all that (i also work so i’m kinda busy atm) so maybe i will be putting you up to speed next week most likely or maybe later than that.

thanks for all the info my friend

Yeah I’m unfortunately a bit like that, I press reply too fast before I’ve finished thinking it through.

Colloquialism. It stopped working hence it has blown up. No actual explosions.

last question (it won’t be the last) if want to dump the code i have to use 5v to power the board right? what do you recommend, using 3v and power the board with let’s say a 9v battery or use the module and the 5v output to power the board without an external power supply?

Power it from the FTDI module. Keeps everything simple and safe
