My Paper Shredder is 1 MIPS

This evening, I opened my paper shredder to clean it and found a roughly 1 MIPS microcontroller inside. Good thing it's not networked. Who knows what sort of shenanigans it and the microwave would get up to at night.

questions come in my mind

  • any meaingfull signals detected?
  • are you going to arduino-ize your shredder?
  • can you tap a signal for your random research? :wink:
  • what type of shredder is it?

Man, I am not going there! We have not had good luck with shredders. This one has lasted the longest, seems to be very well built, and was rather expensive. As long as it continues shredding, no hacking is going to happen.

Shred count comes to mind. But I have no idea what I would do with that bit of trivia.

Maybe something on the entertainment side. Play an MP3 while you wait. Animated LEDs.

Shred count makes sense in highly secure environments I think. It should be in balance with the print count (approx fixed percentage?)
SNMP server with a shredder MIB? does not exist yet ...

  • warning signal (over the network) when it is blocking - I often see people walking away after starting the shred, they don't wait ....
  • auto unblock (back & forth)
  • bin full detection
  • metal detection (staples kill shredders)

For the security nerds

  • adaptive shredding, paper feed speed based upon #pixels detected, more pixels => slower better shredding?

Ugh. We get enough nuisance messages from our HP printers. Won't be buying any more of those.

It does that now. The sad part is that the motor stalls about three seconds before the thing takes action. There's an optical sensor on the motor shaft so it should be able to instantly detect a stall. Maybe they should have used a 2 MIPS processor.
