Remove the shield from the board and make sure ONLY the board is connected to the computer.
It should show up in device manager as a COM port.
If it doesn't then there is an issue with the board.
If it showed up in device manager then...
Use only the IDE and not the program they show in the video.
Select the BLINK example and the correct com port as seen in device manager.
Upload the BLINK example (You may want to change the timing vales so you know it is your copy of blink)
If that works then either your sketch or the shield has an issue.
As a newbie, I am trying to understand the whole concept. For example, words like IDE sounds kind of strange for me to grasp. I am doing my best in researching and finding all the help I can and trying not to deceive my daughter who believes in my capacity to help her understand this device as well.

The IDE is the program you use to UPLOAD sketches (programs) to the board.
I would suggest you learn to use it.
If you click on the software button at the top of the page you can download it from there.
Before that might I suggest you first click on the RESOURCES button at the top of the page and work your way through the GETTING STARTED section at the very least.

So The Blink program you are referring to, will it reset everything and make the device functional again?
It will not restore the original functionality; it's just to test if uploads are still possible and load a simple sketch.
Your kit came with a CD; if you lost it, you can download it from here. You can study the examples, compile them and load them; at the end you will probably have the original functionality back.
