my Xbee doesn't respond to +++?

Hi all..

I'm new with Arduino's and Xbee's..

I got:
Two Xbee Series 2
Two Arduino Duemilanove
Two xbee shields

I tried to get them to communicate by the guide on Arduino's page with psysical Pixels, but it didn't seem to work.

According to the terminal their worked just fine separately but when I moved the jumpers and want them to communicate – nothing happens.
Then I tried to configure the Xbee's by X-CTU which didn't work either.

Then I tried to reset the Xbee's by ATRE command followed by ATWR. (At this point the Xbee response to +++)
But I still not can get them to talk to each other and now neither of the xbee's respond to +++ in X-CTU..

One of the xbee's only responds 1 out of 3-4 times, if I press the reset button. Furthermore the associate lamp blink 1/sec.

On the other xbee the associate lamp isn't given any light at all? Have I killed it?
I've tried several combinations with different Arduino's shields and Xbee, and seem to locate the Xbee to be the problem?
I've tried several different things, and by now I can't remember them all.

Thank you for reading; I hope you have a solution to this.

I believe that RE is read, not reset.

If the application written by the people that makes the XBees doesn't work, nothing else is, either.

How did configuring the XBees using X-CTU fail to work?

Killed it? Probably not. Bricked it? Probably. They can be unbricked with a bit of patience. Google XBee + brick.

Start with getting them configured properly, using X-CTU, and tested using the Range test tab in X-CTU.
