Nano 3.0 & Seagate 7200.11 BSY issue.

Hello everyone. This is my first post and want to make it a good one.

Ok, I received my Arduino Nano 3.0 today and thought I might be able to use it to correct the Seagate 7200.11 BSY issue that others are doing by hacking up a cell phone cable.

I've set up the Nano into the tri-state mode by shorting RST and GND. I also shorted RX and TX (loop-back). Connected via HyperTerminal and what I typed was echoed back. :D

This indicates to me that the Nano is working with HyperTerminal, but I've read many post that RS232 and TTL are not on the same level. If HT is working, am I not communicating properly? If not, can this be done with the Nano or do I need to add some other component(s)?

What is a "Seagate 7200.11 BSY issue"?

Right, TTL is typically 5V 0V signalling and RS232 is +12V and -12V so you need a chip in between, such as max232 chip to translate the voltages.
