what is the problem and what should i do to fix it

Which Processor have you got selected in the IDE ?

Many clone boards use the Old Bootloader

Are you using the official Arduino Nano or the cheaper version? The low-cost version usually has an FT232 chip as USB to serial converter. If you're using that, you'll have to install the FTDI driver first.

Indeed. My Nano compatible required me to select "ATmega328P (Old Bootloader)".

When using the default setting "ATmeg328P", I got the same errors as in the original question:

...
avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 9 of 10: not in sync: resp=0xa1

The official ones use the FTDI chip; the clones usually use the CH340. And for that one, you indeed need to install the driver.

Note:
The FTDI driver should have been installed when the IDE was installed (versions befor 2.0) or after first run (version 2.0).

Is COM4 indeed the Nano? Does it disappear when you disconnect the board?

Hi, @g-smart
What IDE and OS are you using?

Have you been able to program that actual controller previously?

Thanks... Tom... :+1: :coffee: :australia:
