Nano not recognized

Nano ver3 not seen by Windows Vista. FTDI driver 2.08.30. Rolled back to 2.08.28 without any luck. In device manager there are no ports at all.

Windows sees the Mega2560 just fine and automatically assigns a serial port--Com30.

Has anyone solved this problem for the Nano and Windows Vista? Do I need to use an old laptop with XP or earlier?

Further attempts also did not work:

  1. Tried different USB cable
  2. Disconnected from external power (Nano powered only by USB cable)

Windows either reports:

  1. Unknown device
  2. Serial convert A can't start (Code 10)

No clue.

Tried a second Nano that was just hanging on the USB cable, not plugged into the solderless development board--no problem. Serial port recognized and upload worked fine.

Removed first Nano from the development board--it is recognized by Windows and upload works fine!

Previously I had only disconnected the +5V power pin. I'll disconnect both the GND and +5V pins and see if the Nano will communicate if it's plugged into the development board.

Nano is recognized by Windows if I unplug both the GND and +5 pins.

I rate this as a qualified success--no clue why the USB interface is unhappy if the Nano has a larger GND connection.

BTW, how do you change the subject to inlude "Solved"?
