A few days ago I upgraded to 1.8.8 and at some point I selected ATMEL-ICE as the programmer.
Now I am unable to change the programmer back to a USBisp !! I open the tools menue but the "programmer" sub menu will not open !!!
I have tried with the ATMEL-ICE plugged in - doesn't help.
Restarting the IDE and reinstalling 1.8.8 doesn't help either.
I can open all of the other submenues and can even program the card via the bootloader.
What on earth is going on ???
and how can I fix this ???
Desperate,
Dave
OK - I went back to 1.6.13 and the problem was not present.
I then worked forward and discovered that the problem crept in with 1.8.6 !!
1.8.5 is OK but 1.8.6/7/8 all fail to open the sub-menu.
Going back to 1.8.5 to save my sanity.
Dave
Hmmm ... interstingly the problem only seems to happen on my 64Bit Win 7 Pro laptop.
My 32Bit PC running the same OS (just 32Bit) does not have the problem !!
Something to to with the scrollers added in 1.8.6 on 64Bit systems ????

Thanks for reporting this.
Does the problem only occur when you select Tools > Programmer > Atmel ICE, or does it occur no matter which programmer you select?
You mention the scroller. Do you have so many programmers in your Tools > Programmer menu that it has scroll arrows at the top/bottom?
I happened to leave Atmel-ICE selected when I upgraded from an early 1.8.x to 1.8.8 --- and I left it selected while I investigated.
I'll try selecting (say) USBasp and upgrade to 1.8.8 --- but it will have to wait a bit as I lost a lot of time investigating this today.
Under 1.8.5 I do not have scrollers visible - I only mentioned it because that seemed a relevent change in the 1.8.6 changelog. I assume that the scrollers are always there, just not activated until the number of menu entries exceed a threashold.
As I said it only appeares to happen on my 64bit system not my 32bit.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the information. I'm trying to reproduce the problem but I have not been able to on Windows 10 64 bit.
My recommendation is to see if you can reproduce the problem with the Arduino IDE beta build:
If so, please submit a bug report here:
with as much information as possible to help the developers to investigate the issue. I did a search for previous issues and didn't find any.
I just tried selecting USBasp under 1.8.5 and upgraded to 1.8.6 and it all works !! I'm not sure wether to rejoice or not
The AYMEL-ice is OK too.
I'll try the beta in the next day or two.
I just tried 1.8.8 and that is OK now --- looks as if it was a "one off" ... bizzare.
