The tools are so much better than in the punch card days, where I had my first taste of code.
Even a free IDE now is like a home power tool workshop compared to then chisel and stone tablets.
You can try Code::Blocks for Arduino if you want a more standard IDE. You can also customize that one but honestly that's yet more learning curve to justify.
