Need hardware suggestions for outdoor proximity sensor project

Hello,

I want to use my Arduino to create an outdoor proximity sensor / alert system. I looked at the ultrasonic sensors on Amazon for roughly $5, but they have a max range of only 3 meters. I need something that will detect motion at much longer distances ... 10 meters would work, longer would be better.

Can someone suggest some hardware that would work in this application?

Thank you,

Mike Sims

What kind of motion? Will a PIR (passive infrared) sensor work?

Here's one:

Only 20ft, approximately 6 meters, but there are longer distance PIR sensors. The PIR sensor on my porch light turns on when people walk by on the street.

PIR is probably your best option, but they may be optimised for night time (?)

Depending on the details of your application you could also try a light barrier, using TSOP4038 etc (needs some research)

If you use an IR LED and phototransistor, you'll have a beam that someone has to break to set it off that can work from a fairly long range.

Both the LED and phototransistor are parallel to each other, pointed at a retroreflector (like a reflector from a bicycle).
