Need Help finding Distance Sensor

Hi guys, new here!

I am working on a project where I need to figure out if Person A. is away from Object B. Possibly by a distance of 3-5 feet. And must be able to work through a door.

I have been searching for sensors that I could use say one arduino stationary and maybe the person is holding a chip/receiver and when that person gets far enough away from the main emitter I can have an alarm set or a notification triggered.

Any ideas would definitely be helpful

Ive research RF, IR, UltraSonic sensors having a tough time figuring out which will work.

Thanks

How accurately do you need to know the distance? Radio might work, if there are just two possibilities limited to something like: 2 feet (or less) and 50 feet (or more)

I would say in between 2-5 feet just enough so that when the person leaves the vehicle and walks away it can be sensed they have left the area and can trigger a notification/alarm

also thanks for responding.

so that when the person leaves the vehicle

So is that a metal door?
Radio might have difficulty doing that.

Yeah its a metal door.

Im trying to think of another way to achieve the solution I desire without that.

If I used a rf keyfob and emitter do you think I could perhaps code it to where if the key fob is a certain distance a way it will give me my desired response?

You can't measure distance wit RF.

How about an RFID reader in the cab and when it goes out of range it triggers a response. Mind you it will have to be an active tag to cover all the cab.

Not exactly trying to measure distance....I just need to know when someone or something leaves within range.

After some googling I found these.

I guess it more of a rfid booster. Active rfid is a tad bit expensive as this is for senior project trying to keep cost of entire project below 500-600

that device is around 177$

But If i could find a work around for cheaper that would be great.

If you find an active RFID too expensive then the UHF stuff is an order of magnitude more expansive than that.

The only option would be to make your own.

Keyfob transmitters and receivers are cheap, so buy a set and experiment. Adafruit has them.

The maximum range is of course limited, but the minimum range, where you are guaranteed to have a signal if the person is present, is highly variable and depends on a lot of factors.
