do I need this , Sparkfun easy driver to get it going?

You need SOME kind of driver. The Arduino outputs can't handle the 840 mA requirements of the stepper. Neither can the EasyDriver: it only goes to 750 mA.
but the motor will work at 750mA - the EasyDriver might run very hot though. A BigEasyDriver would have more headroom. Big Easy Driver stepper motor driver
