I have this Nema 17 stepper motor

and am looking to hook it up to arduino

do I need this , Sparkfun easy driver to get it going?

I am looking for a way to hook it up without the motor driver.

You need SOME kind of driver. The Arduino outputs can't handle the 840 mA requirements of the stepper. Neither can the EasyDriver: it only goes to 750 mA.

but the motor will work at 750mA - the EasyDriver might run very hot though. A BigEasyDriver would have more headroom. Big Easy Driver stepper motor driver
