Can you just code in the loop the reading of the sensor and printing what it captures - nothing else
See what you get when you walk around. Is that 0 all the time and just a 1 when there is a step - so plenty of 0 with a 1 from time to time ?
Once you know what the sensor is likely to deliver when you walk around you can devise a strategy for having the variable driving the effects change with movement
