I grabbed some 50 pair telephone cable outta the trash, a lifetime (so far) supply is 24 AWG, works good and is kind to breadboards.

I have one of those 30 guage hand wrap tools, I use 28 AWG which fits and is a bit less delicate.

For all small wire a good stripper is essential.
