I like the supplied serial monitor.
But i need one that runs outside of the IDE.
Need to read the stream and send commands back to the board.
This will be used for field setup of IOT devices.
I've tried Putty but that doesn't seem to allow send a string back to the board.
I don't want a large sophisticated troubleshooting tool, something just as simple as the supplied serial monitor would be ideal.
Take a look at Coolterm
You're kidding, surely?
No. Can putty do that? When I open a serial port I just get a serial out stream.
There is a basic one built in to Arduino CLI:
https://arduino.github.io/arduino-cli/latest/commands/arduino-cli_monitor/
What host OS are you using?
windows
All set.
CoolTerm and Tera Term work.
Thanks for the help.
I wrote my own using processing.org, really simple and allows me to save output to file as well, much easier for debugging. It allows for higher speeds >2mb/s so I do not have to slow down my serial communication to be able to interact.
