Which Arduino? The NEO 6M communicates via 3.3 volt signals. What does that documentation tell?

The Neo 6M will reduce the power used, once it has a GPS fix, automatically, that is normal for most all GPSs.

I would like to implement the Power Save Mode with long update period for longer battery life for my project.
You will need to use U-Center to find and test the messages to send to the GPS, see here for some details;
Although I would not bother with a old NEO 6M if you want long battery life, modern GPS use a lot less power.
