Networked push/pull linear actuators

I would like to build a system with a pair of linear actuators that mutually control each other via a network.

Initially I would like to build a single actuator that can be both controlled via internet. I also would like the actuator to be able to be pushed, say manually, and report its position.

Could anyone point me towards similar projects or kits that might help?

I am now to Arduino but generally pretty comfortable with both hardware and software. Hope this is the right sub-forum.

Do the thing in steps,
first get the actuator to work before hooking it to the network.

For the network part there are very useful code snippets in the tutorial section of this site

Every long journey is done in small steps
