Networking Projects with Arduino

Hi everyone,

I am very new to Arduino so please be patient with me. I am a network computing student interested in Wireless Sensor Networks and Zigbee for my dissertation. My main focus is actually on the networking side of this technology and not making lots sensors work etc.

So ideally I would like to get a mesh network going between several Arduino boards and the XBee wireless modules and get them talking and sending data around and I want to carry out tests and deep packet investigation, but all this needs to be evident. It does need to be something more than the devices just talking but I am not sure what, I guess I could test it by adding forms interference to try and disrupt the network. If anyone has any good ideas that are networking based I'd really appreciate any input.

I have been looking for a GUI analysis software tool and cannot find anything that is free (Peryton's only has a trial then you have to pay) or is user friendly (for me personally) that I can use on my Windows. I cannot use ZMonitor or TinyOS etc to be honest it is a bit out of my comfort zone and I require something that is visual so I can represent graphs of things such as packet loss, latency etc.

Again, apologies if I seem very stupid but this is new to me, and I am genuinely interested in this technology - I have been researching but need some further help if someone could shed some light.

Thank you.

Check out draythomp's blog posts on XBee - here's the one about the way he monitors/debugs his xBee network: Desert Home: Monitoring My XBee Network. Unsurprisingly, it does require additional hardware.

Wow - thanks Wildbill that is really useful.

ops someone with same intrest here XD
if you need any help with DD-WRT tell me XD

Does anyone else have any ideas how to make a networking project with Arduino which is fit for testing and experimenting with?
Thank you.

arduino UNO + Xbee sheald to make it wireless, or ethernet sheald :fearful: !! then you must program it
