I think i've mentioned in a handful of posts around here that I've been rewriting the FastSPI_LED library from the ground up to make it faster, more compact, more flexible, and more portable. I have a preview release of the library up (some of the interfaces aren't finalized, and there's some simplification around things like select lines that I still need to implement) here - http://waitingforbigo.com/2013/02/19/fastspi_led2_preview_release/ - I will probably have another beta release some time in march, with a (hopefully) final release at the end of march. Then it will be on to adding new platforms (I'm looking at you, Due!), new led chipsets, and more!
