I did try a different cable and a different USB port. It also doesn't give the "USB device plugged in" sound which it should, I guess. In devices I only have one com port which is present wether or not the mega is plugged in. When I plug it in, no new device pops up in the device manager at all. BUT the duino is receiving power and running the default blink program. Any hints?

Plug in your board and wait for Windows to begin it's driver installation process. After a few moments, the process will fail, despite its best efforts

One last test...
• Open Device Manager
• Connect the board to the computer
• Does the list refresh? (The board would very likely end up as "Unknown Device")
It does not refresh
Seems like its defective to me.
