New user - stupid question

i've been trying now for two days, but i give up, and admit i need help. i have downloaded the software and installed the drivers, but i am unable to upload to the board. i have opened the "blink" sketch and without making any changes, it takes over 6 minutes to compile. i'm using com port 12 but see no port folder on my device manager. i changed the time of the pin high to 100mS but sketch will not upload. i'm unfortunately running vista. i would love to get started, but i'm still stuck in the starting gate. any help would be welcomed

Try turning off any bluetooth stuff in deviece manager - folks have reported success with compile speed issues with that.
Also Java, check that it's up to date.

thank you for your promt advice. i see no mention of bluetooth in my device manager. i'll look into java tomorrow. i did finally get blink sketch to upload, although it took 9plus minutes

There's a Brazilian fellow who posts regularly, he has a post with a few things that seem to fix this. I am haven't no luck finding one of those. Maybe he will jump in, or perhaps someone has that bookmarked & can help.
You can try searching the forum for slow ide, sluggish ide, etc.

day three, thank you for your patience
i have turned off bluetooth, although nothing was on. i updated my java. i searched and searched the forum, but it seems most problems were listed for 0017, i'm using 0022. my ide seems to open fast enough (within 60 seconds), my file menu pops right down when i ask it to.and my desktop icon is as cute as a button. but it takes over 10 minutes to upload a 20 line sketch to the board (blink). the instructions for fixing my library on the 0017 are well beyond my capabilitys. my inability to even get started is disheartning. after waiting 10 minutes for a code to compile, sometimes i get this "C:\Users\Michael\Desktop\arduino-0022\arduino-0022\hardware\tools\avr\bin\avr-ar: WMath.cpp.o: No such file or directory"

Yeah, something is not right there.
Can you do a search on C : and see if WMath.cpp is even on the drive?
I installed -0022 at c:\arduino-0022. Vista wanted to bury it in some virtual users/ownsers drive, had things all messed up when I tried adding libraries. I gave up on that eventually and installed it the very top level instead.

WMath.cpp was found in two places (i downloaded it twice when the first one didn't seem to work) i'm currently downloading it on another machine, perhaps that might help

a modified blink sketch just uploaded sucessfully, it took 15 minutes

Somethings not right with your setups. I can download a 13,000 byte sketch in about 15 seconds. Nothing should take minutes to download.
I have a Sony Vaio, Dual Core 2 GHZ, Vista SP2, 3 GB RAM, for comparison.

again thank you both for your help. i downloaded ide 0022 on an xp notebook. modified blink sketch loaded in under 30 seconds. i guess it's the vista machine. i have done syesem maintenance and have very little loaded on this computer. even 7 minutes seems like an eternity. i don't want to mention parallax, but i've never even noticed a lag when uploading to it w/ the vista o/s.
out of frustration, i switched out the 328 chip with a spare uno chip i purchased, but it will not remember previously loaded sketches after being unplugged. i read that it probably needs the bootloader re-burnt, but which is the one to choose w/ an arduino uno?

ok, one last post. after 20 minutes of uploading bliss, my xp started belching forth more errors messages than the vista did. i give. emily, i wish you the best of luck. is amyone out there in the market for a barely used arduino uno experimenter board w/ spare 326 chip?

I'd say yes, but I already have 2, but several other boards as well, and more PCBs on the way ...
