Newbie advice

Hi guys.,.newbie question. Advice on what inexpensive laptop to buy that I plan only to use for arduino. What operating system is easiest to use, most reliable, etc windows? Os, linux?
I just am not sure. Thanks...I know newbie's suck...just trying not to buy a boat anchor

Any laptop with Windows, Linux or Mac will be sufficient for Arduino programming. I don't know about Chromebooks.

Buy a cheap used laptop if you want to save money.

I suggest you get one with at least 3 USB sockets.

The choice between Windows and Linux is a matter personal preference. Both will work perfectly well. I'm using Linux on this laptop but AFAIK none of the cheap laptops comes with Linux pre-installed.

Well that was not a good start.

As for your Q. that depends on your budget and location.

At least a dual core with at least 8 gig of ram with at least windows 7 would be IMHO the bare minimum.

Surely anything that can run Windows XP would be sufficient?

And if Windows XP as an operating system is not suitable then the same hardware should work fine with PuppyLinux which can be run off a USB stick. I usedTahrPup as my main system for a long time.

Hi Robin.

That would still be my minimum spec even for XP as an OS at todays prices.
It puts you in reach of a very basic win 10 machine and covers more bases in terms of the X64 base.
Chances are also good of getting one at a minimum price in both the new and second hand markets.

Of course if you want to run only Linux then you will get away with a little less but even Linux is moving to the X64 platforms.

That's also why I asked for his budget and location first as they will play a key factor into any decision.
It is not always about the base hardware it can be "what is available in that location" for the market.

You are coming at it from the opposite end to me.

My comment in Reply #4 was only aimed at the very cheapest, lowest spec PC that could be used for Arduino programming.

I agree completely that if one wants a modern PC one should now be buying a 64 bit PC (which includes the laptop I am typing on and which is running Linux Mint).

That's why we work well together as we see different sides of the same coin and come to a consensus
