Newbie - H-Bridge Project question/advice

Greetings and thanks for having a great board.

I had an experiment in mind that I wanted to try but I want to be sure I am or can be capable of doing it!

I have been wanting to tinker with an H-bridge and micro-controller configuration where the micro-controller will reverse current going to the H-bridge when it detects and doesn't detect a magnetic field with a Hall sensor. Can that be done with the following items?

Parallax Melexis 90217 Hall-Effect Sensor
L298 2A 6V-50V Compact Dual Motor Driver Kit
AVR Programming Cable
SFE ATmega328 with Arduino Bootloader

Would something like that work or would a Arduino Uno (Atmega328 - assembled kit be better for a newbie?

That sounds easy enough, what are you powering with the H-bridge?
It is just the same as powering a motor so look at:-

Current is never reversed in the bridge it is in the load that the current is reversed.

Thanks for the reply Grumpy Mike! I think I meant to say what you said but was incorrect.

Basically, I have three triggers that the Hall sensor will pick up:

  1. When detect South magnetic field, spin motor clockwise
  2. When detect North magnetic field, spin motor counter-clockwise
  3. When detects no magnetic field, continue spinning in the direction it was spinning before detecting no magnetic field.

OR

  1. When detect South magnetic field, spin motor clockwise
  2. When detect NO magnetic field, spin motor counter-clockwise

If the rotating object is fairly small, you might consider a continous rotation servo. Servos have small h-bridges built in and might make for a simple and inexpensive motor solution.

You won't be able to measure three states of magnetism (north, south, none) with that hall effect sensor. It is way too expensive as well. Look here for a list of the sensors that might do what you want but it will depend on the field strength.

Most north / south detecting sensors keep the indication in the absence of a field until a different field direction is detected.
